Canna Bed Rain Garden at the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne

The Canna Bed Rain Garden at the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne takes stormwater run-off and filters it before it drains into the Gardens' lake system, improving the water quality of the lakes.

The rain garden is innovative as it is an ornamental feature for the gardens and cannas have been used instead of traditional native plants.  The project required the re-development of the existing garden bed into a rain garden and Ecodynamics was involved in the design and construction of the project.

Significant challenges to overcome included the management of works within a botanic garden, disposal of contaminated soil from the garden bed and salvaging and re-use of the cannas from the original bed.
